Its own dog beach you say! Well that is amazing, thanks Lonely Planet’s Guide to Perth. Other than these fantastic things, Perth has something better and significantly more exciting to offer in 2012, the Australasian Bike Polo Championships. So for all those making the trek west in search of glory and wenches take a gander at what Perth has to offer.

Things To Do:

Eats & Drinks
If none of the following suggestions take your fancy, the CBD has numerous places and simply by riding down the main drag of St George Terrace or through the Murray and Hay Street malls there are many places to eat and drink.

Lunch
Whilst at the courts there are plenty of places to grab a bite to eat in within a 5 minute ride away. However bear in mind that many of these places are fast food such as McDonalds and KFC, however, just down Albany highway in Victoria Park there are plenty of lunch bars and places to get food. See the inset map for local food locations.
Don’t forget the sausage sizzle on Sunday 25th. No need to go scavenging for some food! Nothing better than a sausage in a bun...

Dinner and Beers
The Flying Scotsman, 639 Beaufort Street, Mount Lawley
Good cheap food and beer. Every Sunday night is $10 pizza and pint night. Located 5 min bike ride from the Perth CBD and only 10-15 min from the courts themselves. A local hangout for the PCP regulars. Not only is this a great pub but on Saturdays at 11pm the lady of the fountain spouts copious amounts of beer from her nipples for all those who pay her a visit.
The Broken Hill, 314 Albany Highway, Victoria Park
One of the best steak sandwiches I’ve ever had however can be a little pricey at $20 for a meal. But overall not too bad. They have a good range of beers at reasonable prices. They have a large garden bar area, perfect for large groups of people.

There are a few local bottle shops a short ride away down the famous solid gold roads of Perth. The BWS located at 241 Canning Highway, Como have a good range, however there is a large Vintage Cellars located at 298 Millpoint Road, so there are multiple options.

Vegetarian/Vegan Options
Unfortunately ever since the mad-carrot disease of 1969 there has been little to no vegetables in the city of Perth and as such Perth is strictly a meat only town. The locals rely on the grass and gum trees of the local parks in order to get their 2 fruit and 5 veg, it is encouraged that visitors to the city also do this should they not feel the need to eat the flesh of another animal.

Sleeps
For accommodation try hitting up any backpackers in the city. There are heaps of youth hostel places in the city and around the CBD that have bike racks or enclosed car parks, so locking up bikes shouldn’t be a problem. A quick google search should help you out there. Prices range from about $30-$45 per night.

There are a few places which rent apartments, firstly there is Drake’s apartments which is virtually next to the courts. This could be a very good option, the prices don’t seem too bad with a 3 bedroom apartment for $210 per night so for ~6 people that’s about $35 a night for the weekend. And with the added bonus of kitchens and private bathrooms etc. Seems ideal for team “bonding”. The website is here, http://www.drakesapartments.com.au/3bed.php. Similarly try the Metro Inn in South Perth which is also insanely close to the courts.

There are also a few places on the way from the airport. One, the Great Eastern Motor Lodge offers interconnecting units or rooms which can fit up to 4/5 people per room from around 210 per room again. This isn’t too far away from the court. Most likely a 20min ride at the very max.

The Courts:
Very easy to locate. Close to the city (1 km across the Causeway). Check out the map by google mapping, McCallum Park, Victoria Park Western Australia 6100. The courts are located just next to the skate park next to canning highway and are impossible to miss.

As you may know, Perth have recently returned from Adelaide after competing in the Australasian National Hardcourt Bike Polo Championships (AHBPC11). It is the third time Perth have represented, and this year we came in record numbers with 12 people attending, represented by 5 teams as follows:

"Godzilla Symphony" - Nick M, Yohei, Nick D (aka God)

"Shit City Bike Polo Club" - Scotty, Mattie and Wall

"Not Prawi Enough" - Tom, Brad, Shane

"Rejected Monkeys" - Kristy, Scott (Melb), Derren

And I was invited to play with an interstate team, Storm Boys - Lewis (Syd), Damon (Melb), Me

Saturday hosted a round robin tournament which would determine the seeding for Sunday's double elimination. Day 1 saw some tough battles, Not Prawi Enough were put into a rough draw and faced some of the best teams in the state, however they never went down without a fight and played out most of their games to the end only losing by one or two goals.

Godzilla Symphony were on the same lines and had some really close games, along with Rejected Monkeys who played out some close games with Kristy pulling out some amazing saves. On the other side of the court were Shit City, who rised to the occasion and managed to come on top of the Perth teams ranking 10th after day one, where we saw Scotty pull of some huge shots, with Wall and Mattie bringing the rukus and holding some good defence. An excellent result after day one.

After a long day of play we hung out for a few beers at the Old Exchange, but by 10pm most of us were too buggered to keep on going and headed back to our hotels to catch up on some sleep. Day 2 was the day that counted, due to the double elimination format, there was always a second chance to come back and it was do or die.

Early on it wasn't looking too good, with most of the Perth teams getting knocked out the 1st bracket early in the day, but we weren't going down without a fight. In a tough game between Godzilla Symphony and Triple Dutch Rudders (ranked 5th) it looked like TDR had the upper hand (no pun intended), but in a moment of magic, Yohei managed to pull 3 goals in quick succession to win the game! A huge upset and a game Yohei will never forget, I overheard Nick D after the game saying "Well, we ain't letting Yohei sit in goals next time!"

I didnt get a chance to follow all the games as I had to play with the Storm Boys but word on the court told me that Rejected Monkeys started coming together as a team and in a close zero-zero game against Shit City, the derby came down to a golden goal situation, Rejected Monkeys won and knocked out by their fellow state team. Not Prawi Enough also managed to knock out the 5th ranked Triple Dutch Rudders in an upset game, progressing furthur on in the tournament.

Pulling out win after win, Not Prawi Enough were eventually knocked out in a close game against MPS. One of the phrases commonly heard on that day was "The scoreboard didn't reflect the game", most the games were very close and could have gone either way. At the end of the day, the final rankings were as follows:

A fantastic result from everyone!

It was an absolutely awesome weekend, this year we have 5 new members from Perth represent for the first time, it was amazing to watch everyone play and improve as the tournament progressed. I'm sitting here more than a week after nationals and I've already seen an increase in skill level, but more importantly, I feel as if attending Nationals has brought the local Polo community closer together. Attending Nationals has allowed us to meet so many amazing people from across the country and this has created some strong ties and new friendships. I look forward to meeting and playing with everyone in the near future. A special thanks to Adelaide for hosting this years nationals, it was a truly memorable event.

Just came back from the Sydney Bench Minor sore and bruised, it was a crazy weekend of ups and downs and an important stepping stone to the future of how polo is played and reff'd in Aus. Will explain in furthur detail this tuesday :)

Sunday 16.1.11 will be a huge bike day in Perth.

Bike Jam has secured the Perth premier for the the new film from the Trafik crew - To Live & Ride In L.A. The screening starts @ 8pm @ The Bakery, 233 James st Northbridge. Before the screening there is going to be hours of fun. @ this stage Bike Jam is looking at organizing a ride/cruise thru the streets, trick comps and possibly a polo demonstration.

This is a massive coup for the Perth bike community, so come on down and check it out. For those who need more incentive, Its free and there are rad giveaways.

Sunday Polo + Midweek madness

Well 2011 has arrived and its Polo season.

This Sunday we'll be playing at our usual location of Mount Lawley Highschool Carpark. Theres a link on the sidebar with a map, if you've never played there before. 3pm start. It's going to be a scorcher so bring lots of water and sunscreen.

We'll also be re-introducing our midweek sessions, these are typically a little shorter than Sunday's play, so its non-stop pickup action. Again, we'll be playing at MLHS carpark but we're open to suggestions for new court locations. Theres a new basketball court on the south perth foreshore, we definitely have to squeeze a game in there sometime!

Around the country there are a few tournaments going on. I recently went to a pick-up tournament in Adelaide which was great fun, and I'd highly encourage everyone to keep an open mind about interstate tournaments, if you have the time and a little extra cash, its a great way to enhance your polo experience.

You don't have to travel specifically for polo. Almost every state in Australia has a local bike polo club. If you just so happen to be interstate, take a mallet with you and get in contact with the host city. Its always interesting to see how other cities play compared to us, you'll be surprised at how similar everything is, but a change of location and different players is a great mix-up from your regular sunday session so its a great learning experience.

In the next month there is the Australian Bench Minor Tournament hosted in Sydney on the 4/5th of feb, and also the Australia Day Tourney, hosted in Melburn. I'll try my best to announce upcoming tournaments on this site so everyone can keep updated.

If theres one tournament to go to this year its the Australian Hardcourt Bike Polo Championships (which will be in Adelaide this year), the mecca of tournaments in Australia. Last year we had a 3 teams from Perth represent, and hopefully we can match that again this year... currently no date has been announced by Adelaide but rumours suggest mid-May so keep your diaries open and watch this space.

Well, if there was any space to watch it would be Bikepolo.com.au I think 2011 will bring more tournaments than ever, hopefully Perth can host some interstate guests in the future. League of Bike Polo is also a great resource, and a great way to keep up with the world of polo, if you haven't registered, do so. Theres a great forum on there with some interesting and entertaining topics.

2v2 KISS and TELL: results

Wow, what a great day of fun! I'll try my best to summarise the day's events.

The day started off with mumma-prawi cooking some spring rolls (the main event for the tournament), then me heading off to the courts to sort things out. I sent a message out the night before "10 am registration, be there or don't play"... PCP has a bad habit of being fashionably late... 1.5 hours later Matty rocks up with his Death Machine and BBQ:

I missed a phone call the day before and checked my voicemail. "Gday Prawi, just calling up about the weather tomorrow, have you seen it?" So off I go to see the weather forecast. Periods of rain with a chance of a thunderstorm. Oh gawd. No worries, we play polo, a little bit of rain wont hurt right? Turns out the rain was one of our saving graces, 33 degree weather with scorching humidity, at times we were praying for rain. By the end of the day the clouds cleared and the weather was ace (albeit a bit warm).

Next up, in typical Prawi form, I left things a little late and decided to sort the brackets out the night before. Looking at our facebook invites I was expecting roughly 10 teams. okay, thats not too bad, now, lets put that into a round robin format plus a double elimination.. did the maths and realised that it would involve over 60 games. "OH SH*T", we'll never finish this tourney in time. Fortunately as we all know, facebook invites don't really count for much, we had 7 teams arrive by the start of games play. We then decided that we should play out a round robin and see how much time we would have in the end.

We drawed the 14 names out of a hat and the teams came together as follows:

Tom/Wall - Piss Buddys
Shane/Prawi - Sham WOW
TowTruck/Brad - Granny Wank
Bobby/Derren - Sea Shepards

The random teams pretty much turned out perfect, (imo) no team was at a super ad/disadvantage, and we were happy to welcome two new players to polo, Hesh and Shane.

We set the format to 10 minute games or first to 3 goals. This allowed for some fast exciting games, and for the 2v2 format, 10 minutes seemed like an eternity and 3 goals was enough to leave you buggered by the end of the game. Time to play some POLO: 3..2...1...

After about 3 and a half hours the round robin was over, it flew by. The standings by then end were:

Every team managed to squeeze in a win, with ShamWow undefeated and Piss Buddys not too far behind. It was time to do some eliminating. By then we were all pretty much buggered and it was scorching hot, so we agreed on a single elimination format for the end. We drew up the tables and the tourney quickly narrowed down to the finals.

There were a few upset games within the elimination round, most notably 6th seeded Hazards of Dukes pulling out a win against the 2nd seeded team, Piss Buddys. HOD then went on to defeat Granny Wank, seeded 3rd. Before they knew it, they were in the Finals.

Ginger Ninjas won their first game in a tight battle against Team Gerbil, but were defeated by the well rested Sham Wow who got a bye due to their number 1 seeding. In the end it was Hazards of Dukes (Nick and Hesh) vs Sham WOW (Shane and Prawi), wow, Hesh and Shane, both totally new to the game, BOTH made it to the finals. Props! We let the newbies battle out the joust and the game was on. Hesh put in some gutsy attacks, at one point his whole body was over his handle bars reaching for the ball and Shane applied really good defensive pressure making hard for the opposition to score.

It came down to 2-all, next goal wins. Some tight defence on both teams made it hard to score and the ball went back and forward. In the end i got a lucky break and got into a breakaway to score the final goal of the tournament.

KISS and TELL: 2v2 Polo Tournament

Keep it simple stupid, and TELL EVERYONE.

From our shy begginnings of 6 regular players, Perth Cycle Polo has expanded and grown significantly and we feel that now we have the depth to create our first ever state tournament.

This month we're proud to announce our inaugural 2v2 polo tournament. The plan is simple: 2v2 tournament, random teams, round robin + double elimination, no prizes, no dramas, just spring rolls. SIMPLE.

So whats the plan?

Rock up at 10am and chuck everyones name into a hat. Names will be drawn in 2's and for the rest of the tournament, this pairing will play together as a team until they get eliminated.

I will bring down an epic amount of spring rolls, SOMETHING YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS OUT ON. and hopefully it'll be a great afternoon of fun. If you've never played before, this is probably the best oppurtunity to get in amongst the action.

Becoming an incorporated association

Perth Cycle Polo is in the process of becoming a registered association (i.e. becoming incorporated in WA). One of the reasons we are doing this is to support our cause when it comes to dealing with government bodies. We are currently tossing up names but the most likely is Australian Hardcourt Bike Polo. For a summary of what becoming incorporated means, see this link.

Found it in Cottesloe, across the road from ocean beach restaurant. Beach front. It seems like skateboarders playing ground but it wasn't used when I saw it. The size is about 2/3 of tennis court so it is a bit small for polo court but a great location for sure. What you reckon?

Fighting over us

Yesterday we had two publications fighting over us for interviews. David from The Voice Community Newspaper was there to meet us, camera and note pad in hand. Minutes later Ana, a post grad journo, working for the web site Perth Now, rocked up.
We had a few games while the press filmed and snapped away. Then Brad 'I'm no good in front of the camera' Pretel, game a rather professional interview to Ana. Tom jumped up and answered a few questions too.
On friday night a few of us went to the making of a star. with God making his screen debut in the role (that was written just from him) - Hi my name is Nick. A story of a boring office worker by day, to master polo player by weekend.
The film/doco had some great polo footage, as well as some guest appearances by, Derren, Prawi and myself. Congrates to the girls for a great job.
So, when these 3 articles and footage become available we will post them here.

PCP has hit celebrity status. Two weeks ago we had some students from Mount Lawley Senior High shoot a small assignment whist we played. Now students from Edith Cowan Uni are shooting a doco on us. Shooting started sunday just gone, but the majority will be shot this sunday the 19th after 6pm. The students are organizing lights so we can play a night game.

Weather permitting filming will take place at MLSH, but if it is raining we will move it to The Polonade. So bring your A-game and your stage make up.

Play will start at the usual time of 3pm.

Tho tonight (30th) there is a Blue Moon ride leaving from outside the Melbourne Hotel at 8pm and heading to Little Creatures in Freo. It should be a cruisey ride ending in pints.

Sundays trip to Rocko for the Bike Week exhibition game went well. The grass made for some slower play but the crowd still loved it, tho there weren't too many of them, due to the freeway ride. A couple of the old boys had a ride on our bikes and some even played a couple of games.

Rocko Bike Week Exhibition

This Sunday (21st) We will be doing an exhibition game in Rockingham for the bike week festivities. play will kick off at 9am till 10.30. There will be bike maintenance stands, unusual bike shows and other bike related stuff. But most importantly bike polo. 86 Thomas until we find a better location, I guess. Netball WA has a whole heap of courts in Jolimont. A cool down period of a couple months would surely make the colonnade useable again?

Unfortunately we have been asked to stop playing at the Colonnade carpark. We will do so respectfully and are grateful to have played in such a great location for however long we did.

Now, we are in search for a new location.

Here are some things to consider when looking for a court.

-Central Location (the closer to the CBD the better)
-Flat Smooth Surface (Concrete is best)
-Edging (So the ball doesnt go miles away)
-Shade (Because Perth is hot, and Bobby is allergic to the sun) (rain too..)
-Lighting (Does it have lights? Will it be bright enough to play polo at night?)

If you can meet 3 of these criteria, then the court has lots of potential. Unless we win lotto and make our own court, the chances of us finding the perfect polo court are pretty slim.

the Belgiums in Adelaide

A citytrip wouldn’t be complete without a game of polo with the locals. The boys (and girl) from the Adelaide Bicycle Polo Club were nice enough tohost 2 games while we were in town. The first one was on Wednesday in a parking lot in Chinatown. Chris was on an unlucky streak and ran a flat on arriving, but Tom & Nicky had fun playing. We got a bit of a shakedown though, those guys didn’t finish 5th in the nationals for nothing!

The sun was out on Sunday and 14 people showed up to play at the Wakefield tenniscourts. Everyone had a blast and things got pretty hectic playing 7 on 7! The last game was for the official intercontinental polocup and sadly Belgium lost 5-3 to Australia We met heaps of nice dudes, had fun playing and impressed everybody with the techniques we picked up in Perth!

We play weekly on Sundays at the top floor of the Colonnade Carpark in Subiaco. Its on Hay Street and opposite Nandos. See map here. We usually meet up at 3pm and play till around 8pm Feel free to come and watch our games any time, I'm sure we could lend you a bike too if you were keen on playing!

Possible new location

So I went for a quick ride and bumped into this. Freshly re-paved carpark literally just around the corner from my place. It looks quite narrow, but to put things into perspective, the oval next to it is a soccer pitch. Its roughly the same width as the colonnade and a little longer.

The 4 arrows are lights. There were only two on when I got there, but there was enough lighting to see the whole carpark. Location is Hensman St, South Perth and the park is Ernest Johnson. Theres also quite a large carpark on the other side, I'll check that out tommorow.

Anyone keen to check it out and play a game of pickup sometime next week? (is South Perth too far from everybody?)

PCP vs Pink Panthers.

This was our final game and by far the most exciting. The game went to a tie breaker which went non stop. It was pouring with rain, making the court as slippery as ice. I was relegated to goalie through most of it and my heart was pumping like crazy throughout the game, some of the attacks Sydney made gave me mini heart attacks when it was 2v1. After some lucky blocks we continued playing our tie-breaker and it seemed like the game would never end. The rain was pouring heavily and Ash's brakes decided to fail at the worst possible time, making it impossible to stop quickly. There were falls left, right and centre, Brad had bruises in places unimaginable, and Ash had a bruised heel on one leg and a crook knee on the other, "I don't know which leg to limp on", he said. I fell halfway through the game and rolled my ankle, towards the end of the day it was looking like an egg!

In the end Steve (?), scored the final goal. Some of the crowd thought it was a shuffle, but PCP were happy not to contest and finish the game on a high. One of my favourite quotes for the weekend was "Polo was the Winner". Indeed it was, we had an awesome weekend watching, playing, and experiencing Melbourne culture. The cycling culture especially was amazing, cars gave you plenty of room and just seeing so many people out riding was great. Coming from Perth, seeing girls riding on old step through frames everywhere was like... wow. Hopefully that will rub off on Perth one day ;)

I'd like to give thanks to Melbourne Bike Polo Club for hosting it, its hard to imagine the amount of time and effort that was put in for the Championships. From setting up all the sponsorship to giving us food and shelter, it was all very much appreciated.

I think some people (including myself) forget why we started playing polo, and that was to have fun! We had lots of it, on and off the court. Undies reminded me of the old days in Perth, when we were still playing polo on our daily steeds and the phrase "Polo bike" was a foreign term. I'm looking forward to coming back to the courts, playing some pick-up, taking the brakes off and playing like we did in 2008 and just have some fun!

Nationals Update

Day one of the National Polo Tournament started off beautiful and sunny but in an untypical kinda Melbourne way it ended with heavy rain.
With 18 teams and a round robin style there are alot of games to be played. Today we played 7. We lost 2, drew 2 and won 3. We got a bit of a tough early draw, coming up against some of the better teams. 2 of our games we played on a very wet and slippery court.
We are fairing well, tho tomorrow we will be playing 9 more games and then hopefully, the finals which maybe another 5 games.
Beers have been rationed and carefully monitored, there is no room for drunken polo here.
There is a great crew here and it is awesome to be amoungst so many polo players.

More updates later and some pics when i get home and have a chance to dump a million pics from my camera.

Where'd the Ball go?

So we've been getting a bit of media coverage lately.

Perth Cycle Polo has been mentioned in a few online articles, along with Brad's amazing radio appearance on 720 last week, where the beloved "toyota camry" was mentioned (inside joke). The presenters made the sport sound surprisingly brutal, however its not all that bad!

Polo isn't as brutal as it sounds, Ash has been riding his stealth alloy Raceline Record frame to polo for around a year now, it barely has a ding yet alone a scratch, and we can all agree that he doesn't go easy on it either. This is no guarentee though! Broken spokes, taco'd wheels and damaged pride are just a few examples of rare occurances.

Its hard to explain how fun polo is to play until you actually come down and play it yourself. The excitement you get from hitting a goal, blocking a ball or even tackling is awesome. In between games we just sit back, have a chat and sip down a beer.. (or non alcoholic beverages for those who are underaged).. or just water if you're me..

Anyway, Footy season is finally over we can now play in our "Summer Location" every week, and thats at the Colonnade Carpark. 3pm start till late every Sunday. I encourage anyone to come along and check it out!

Based on Melbourne 2009 Rules and Current Practice.

Rules and Gameplay

Bike Polo is a game played in good spirit. The fewer rules and disruptions to play the better.
These rules are based on 2 years of bike polo in Melbourne. Keep it simple, keep it nice and keep playing polo.

Safety

Mallet handle and handle bar ends must be capped.
Exposed outer chain rings should be covered.
Helmets required for Tournaments/Championships
No t-boning/ramming. (Hitting the side of another bike with the front of yours)
Stop play in the event of injury
No mallet to body/bike contact.
No mallets above handlebars.
No throwing mallets.
No mallets under (malleting) or through wheels.
No dangerous mallet heads.

Gameplay

To start the game, referee calls 3,2,1 (Polo/Go/Kill etc).
Shuffling, dribbling and passing may be done with the side of the mallet.
Games are 10 or 15 minutes or first to 3 or 5 goals.
Games will be timed by the referee.

Contact

Like to like only contact is allowed: mallet on mallet, body on body (hip n shoulder, no grabbing), bike on bike (wheel on wheel).
Mallet hooking is encouraged.
Mallet hacking behind the play is not cool.
Moving picks/screening/shepherding is encouraged.

Goalies

There are no special privileges or additional restrictions for goalies
Any player on a team may act as a goalie at any time

Footdown / Tapping In

If your feet touch the ground you cannot play the ball or obstruct other players untill you have tapped back in.
Kicking the ball on the ground counts as a dab.
Tap in points will be setup on either the boundary at the half line.

Airborne ball

You may punch, slap or swat (but not grab or kick) an airborne ball to the ground.

Scoring

Shuffles do not count as a goal.
Scooping/Ball Jointing cannot be used to score
Shots on goal must be done with the end of the mallet to score.
You cannot feed yourself the ball through the goal then score or be in goals when scoring.
To ensure an adequate break in play after scoring, both teams to return to their halves.
Defenders cannot cross half till an attacker or the ball crosses half.
Defenders/spectators to keep goal cones correctly in place.
TO BE DETERMINED. Goals have a height limit of: (The Cones/1m/Handlebar Height/Shoulder Height/Infinite)
Own Goals count (Keep the ball out of your goals)

Out of bounds

Nearest player or preferably spectator to retrieve and return the ball to play by throwing gently without favour, not in front of goals.

Substitutions

Gameplay will stop for injury or mechanical failure resulting from a crash.
Gameplay will not stop for mechanical failure due to poor maintenance or equipment. Referees discretion applies.
A team may only substitute players in the case of injury, or at the referees discretion for other reasons.
It is the responsibility of the team playing to have a spare player, bike or wheels available for instant substitution.

Broken ball

When a ball breaks, the possessing player or spectator may stop play to replace the ball otherwise the ball will be replaced when a goal is scored or when it goes out of bounds.
